History of Seattle: In 1851, settlers arrived to at Alki point on the Western edge of Elliot Bay. After a gruelling winter, they decided to move to the eastern shore, and thereby developed a small village that they called, "Seattle". Seattle thrived on all the lumber that was readily available, building many homes, ships and mills. However the abundance of wood would lead to the biggest disaster in the history of Seattle. In 1889 a fire broke out and engulfed almost the entire city. Despite this horrific disaster, having to rebuild the city out of brick and stone created many jobs, and therefore made the Great Depression in the early 1900's much less catastrophic to the people living in Seattle.
